DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Recall
The ASR Hip System from DePuy Orthopaedics has been recalled by the manufacturer due to the implant's failure rate and the problems it has caused for those who have received the unit. While most implants, and the manufacturer specifically, had pledged that these implants normally last more than ten years, the DePuy hip implant has been failing in as short as two to three years. The manufacturer has acknowledged this failure rate, noting 1 in 8 had to have the implant fixed through a revision surgery. Though they have been willing to admit these numbers, this does not make the failure rate acceptable.
Revision surgery is not a simple process and can often be painful for the patient as they move the hip implant to the correct position. The implant has been cited as being flawed because it has to be positioned very accurately with a very slim margin of error.
